Makeup is meant to enhance our features not to bring negative attention to you. And with aging skin if you are not applying your makeup correctly you can end up making yourself looking even older and who wants that?!

While we understand it is natural to want to use makeup to hide some of our imperfections and aging complexion, you want to make sure you are going about it the correct way, and we’re here today to share with you a few makeup tips for aging skin.

As we get older, we also start to lose our complexion’s youthful look.  When this happens our face starts to sag, crack, and crinkle. Unfortunately, makeup can sit in these areas, highlighting those imperfections as well as creating false wrinkles.

So What Should You Be Doing?

Prep The Skin & Skincare

You want to make sure that you are starting with the healthiest skin. That is why you need to have a daily skin care regimen in place.

You see, there are tons of damaging elements that are skin is exposed to every day, like dust, pollutants, sweat, even makeup, all in which can clog the pores, leaving the skin looking dull and uneven. A clean surface is the key, without it, your makeup will fail you.

Use A Moisturizer

Using a moisturizer is vital to restoring your skin's hydration. Proper hydration improves the look of firmness and revitalizes the appearance of tone and texture. A great moisturizer with antioxidants, like Michael Todd Beauty’s Damascus Rose Enriched Anti-Wrinkle Cream is ideal for aging skin as it will help to plump up the appearance of your fine lines! So never leave home without it.

Correctly Applying Your Skincare Products

When it comes to using your skincare products, you want to apply in a circular motion focusing on the lines and wrinkled area.  AVOID pulling and tugging on the skin.

Adding A Retinol To Your Skincare Regimen

Adding a retinol to your skin care regimen, like our C35X RETINOL SERUM, will help to improve the appearance of dark spots, fine lines, enlarged pores and uneven textured skin for a more youthful look and improved radiance.

Exfoliation

Proper exfoliation helps to remove dead skin build-up and encourages cellular turnover while making your skin look brightly polished and radiant.  If you don’t use a product to help remove the dead skin, your face will start looking dull, dry and OLD and your makeup will sit on this old looking skin! We recommend the Soniclear Elite, as it helps you to look younger while getting older!

Makeup For Aging Skin

First, you want to give your makeup bag a makeover! Go through it and remove any powdered formulas. You instead want to stock your bag up with creams, liquids, and some gels, as the key is hydration.

Primer

Similar to the primer that you would apply to a wall before painting, you want to do the same with your eyes and face.  Makeup primer allows the color to adhere better, last longer, with little transparency and minimal fading.  They can also prevent creasing and false wrinkles.

Cover-up

It is a catch 22 as we want to hide our imperfections, but you don’t want to cover yourself with a thick foundation.  Also, you want to avoid matte formulas as they can make your skin look dry and flakey.

BB Creams are a fantastic choice as they are perfect for hydrating the skin as well as evening out your skin tone.  BB creams also contain antioxidants, SPF and other key ingredients that are designed to improve the look of your skin's health.

Illumination: Some bb creams provide some great light defusing elements that can help to blur your imperfections, giving you a subtle, youthful glow.

Use the correct color.  Choosing the wrong color is bad at any age, but with older skin, the goal is to minimize. When selecting a color, you want to make sure you are staying as close as possible to your natural skin color.

Test the product correctly, by applying it to your clean, makeup free face. NOT your underarm area that you've been told for years!

Blush

When it comes to blush, you want to make sure that you are mimicking your skin.  Natural radiant skin is the goal.

• Cream blushes are much more moisturizing, and this is why we like them for maturing skin.

• Apply the blush to the highest point of your cheekbones.

• Stay away from contouring and bronzers as these products can make you look like you have some skin discolorations and draw attention to your aging skin.

Lipstick

• Avoid dark lipsticks as they can slide into your lip lines, giving that feathering appearance.

• Dark lipsticks also make your lips look smaller.

• Go for a moisturizing nude lipstick.

• And don't forget to exfoliate and moisturize your lips!

Eyeshadow

• Stay away from frosted eyeshadows. Instead, you want to look for softer shades.

• Heavily pigmented shadows as well as frosted or glitter can emphasize the wrinkled thin eye area.

• Neutrals are king for you.

• Make sure to use an eyeshadow primer to prevent creasing or hooded looking lids.

Eyeliner

• You want to avoid dark eyeliner as it can make your eyes looking droopy. Instead, try using a brown gel eyeliner.  You also will get a more even application, and it glides on smoother.

• Try applying in a thin line.  Too thick of an application can age you.

Mascara

Over the years, our lashes flatten and start to thin, so you want to use products that will make your lashes appear longer going in an upward sweep. The trick is to use an eyelash curler and a lengthening mascara; this can also give you a brighter eye.  You can also skip the mascara, but always make sure you use your eyelash curler!
